Unit 2
Software Types
Off-the-shelf: software made for general use, made for multiple purposes. Office software, video games, editing software.

Shareware: allows the user to trial software for a limited time, e.g WinRAR.
Freeware: freely available for download and use, usually closed source.
Embedded: smaller computer inside a larger device, with a dedicated purpose.
Protocols
TCP: allows packets to be sent and received between computer systems, breaks data into packets and reassembles them at the destination.

HTTP: used to transfer web pages over the internet, so that users can view them in a web browser.

Application Software
Productivity: general use software for completing tasks efficiently. Word processors, presentation software, web browsers.
Business: specialist software for a business, often bespoke. CAD CAM

Components
Expansion Cards

NIC: allows computers to connect to a network, allowing them to transfer data between computers.
Sound: converts analogue to digital, or the other way around.
Ports
USB: connects storage and input devices to a computer, and allow for data transfer.

Ethernet: connects computers to a moden or router, alloing internet access.

Communication Hardware

Switch: receives data packets, processes them and then transfers to the specific device listed in the packets.
Modem: sends data across a telephone network. Converts digital signals to analogue signals for data transfer. A second modem transfers back to digital at the end.
Router: used to transfer data packets across a network, calculates the shortest path.
WAP: provides a link between wired and wireless devices, creates a LAN to allow Wi-Fi enabled devices to connect to a wired network.
Unit 3
Servers
FIle: centrally stores and manages files, provides security and user access levels. Able to provide automatic backups.

Database: manages database software, allows multiple computers to access information. More reliable than individual computers.

Mail: send and receive mail uses SMTP and POP allowing for communication between email servers. Makes sure that emails are delivered to the correct users.
Hypervisor: allows a host machine to operate virtual machines as guest systems. Shares the resources of the host.
