ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS: take a position regarding a fact, policy, or value
ARGUMENT TYPES
Deductive: when there are premises that establish the truth of an argument, making it valid. When the argument is valid and the premises are true, the argument is "sound"
EX: "All dogs have four legs, John's pet is a dog, therefore John's pet has four legs"
Rogerian: method that requires author to identify the ideas, beliefs, and arguments that he / she and the audience share in common

STEPS TO SUCCESS

6) draft a thesis and support it with further claims, evidence, and commentary
CLAIMS & EVIDENCE: claims should be relevant to the argument being made and evidence should support each claim, and also have commentary / reasoning that ties back to the primary claim (thesis)
REFUTATION: in an argumentative essay, a counterclaim should be included, along with proof why it is wrong, to develop a stronger and more complex argument

PAST ESSAY PROMPT
In a 2018 interview about the importance of collaboration, then-United States Representative Carlos Curbelo stated: “If you’re trying to convince someone that they need to get involved in an issue or perhaps change their thinking on an issue, trying to scare them is not always effective and can actually sow resentment.” Write an essay that argues your position on the extent to which Curbelo’s claim about persuading others is valid.
PROMPT Debrief: for this writing task, the author is being asked to decide whether Curbelo's claim (persuading others through fear is not entirely effective) is valid, and to provide evidence/reasoning and develop a complex argument based on their position
-
-
PERSONAL IMPROVEMENT: during timed writes, I tend to miss the sophistication point, so I should try to further develop a complex argument or recognize any counter arguments and further prove them wrong to strengthen my own
