1.6 Christian eschatology
Divergent views
Evangelical Protestants
They believe that the body will be resurrected on judgement day to determine whether they go to heaven or to hell
The dead will be raised to join the living for the final judgement
On that day Jesus will return to
earth to declare the end of the world
and seperate the good and the bad so there is a division between who goes to heaven and hell (parable of the sheep and goats)
The good will go to heaven and the bad will go to hell
Some believe that good non-christians will go to heaven
After death, the body will remain in the grave until the Last Day
Liberal Protestants
They believe in the immortality of the soul (when the body dies but the soul lives on)
The souls are given a second chance to enter heaven
They believe that hell is not a real place, rather it is the absence of God
Some Liberal Protestants do not believe that hell exists at all
Catholic Christians
They believe that after a person dies, the perfectly pure souls will go to heaven, and the disobedient will go to hell
They believe that Christians who have
unforgiven sins
will be purified in a place called Purgatory
Since it is very hard to be completely free from sin, nearly all Christians will have to go to Purgatory
Protestants don't believe in Purgatory because it is not mentioned in the Bible
After being purified, they can go to heaven
At the end oif the world, all will be raised, and the sould from purgatory will join the ones in heaven, while the evil ones will return to hell
Eschatology in the Bible
The idea of resurrection is
taught by St Paul and is
heavily mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15
The most well-known example of Judgement in the Bible is in the parable of the sheep and goats
There are many places in the Bible where heaven is described as an abode with God
Belief in the immortality of the soul comes from Jesus telling the robber who was crucified with him 'this day you will be with me in paradise'
st Paul in 2 Corintians teaches that all Christians long for Heaven and because they are aiming for heaven, they lead good lives
Sources of wisdom and authority
In 1 Corinthians 15, it says that the dead will be brought back to life
at the end of the world
In the parable of the sheep and goats it describes the seperation of people on judgement day, where the good people (who helped the suffering) would be sent to heaven and the bad people (who didn't help the suffering) would be sent to hell
The Catechism says that Christians who have sinned will go to purgatory
to be purified
Importance of life after death for Christians
It influences how they live today because they try to do good deeds in order to go to heaven
It shows them that they will be rewarded for their good deeds and punished for their sins
They believe that sins prevent a person from entering heaven so they try to avoid it
Gives their lives meaning and purpose
