You work in a practice that is considering a move from film based conventional radiography to a more modern system. The practice partners have asked you to present them with information comparing the current system to other systems that are available to them.
Complete the brief assigned to you including discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the different systems
-
-
comparion of both systems presented to practice principle to choose a new system - radiography is an excellent diagnostic aid in first opinion practice, the move to a digital system could increace efficiency and the diagnostic quality of images produced
-
modern X-ray systems
computed radiography - replaces film with an imaging plate (IP) similar to cassets, can be used in conjunction with conventional X-ray machines - saves money
digital radiography all elements for conversion of x-rays to an electrical signal contained in a flat pannel detector - produces an almost immediate image on screen DDR - converts x-ray directly to an electrical signal IDR - converts x-rays to light then electrical signal. more expensive as requires specific and dedicated equip
post processing tecniques - enahnce image and improve diagnostic value e.g mirroring to compare two limbs
computed radiography
advantages
-
-
much quicker image generation than film based radiography, imaging plate placed in processor - takes 1 min
-
-
disadvantages
-
less efficient in comparison to digital systems, but more effecient than film based conventional
-
careful management of flat pannel detectors, storgae, cleaning, wiping before each exposure to avoid scatter which would reduce diagnostic quality of image
digital radiography
advantages
-
-
-
more hyginic system / all contained, less cleaning etc required - time consuming
-
no physical storage for x-rays required - stored digitally on patients file through PMS making them easier to access
disadvantages
-
-
availability of post processing tecniques can result in laziness and poor collimation increcing radiation exposure to patiet
-
conclusion - the system chosen depends on practice finaces, etc. computed systems would be the simplest and cheaper option as the origional x-ray machine can remain, however digital radiography produces excellent image quality
