Karl Marx idea in 1800s
Karl Marx who developed the idea in the 1800s thought was unfair that property owners made money and others did the work.
1900s
By 1900s desire for change was growing through out the Russian empire.
1905s
In 1905 , soldiers shot hundreds of people who had come to demand help from Czar Nicholas II. Called "the bloody Sunday".
1917
Russian people were even angrier with the Czar. People also upset about Russia's involvement in World War 1. The leader "Vladimir Lenin" of the radical Bolshevik Party , thought it was time for a communist government. The stage was set for a revolution.
The Soviet Union
1917
In early 1917 , the Russian people revolted. When the czar's soldiers switched sides to support the revolution , the czar was forced to give up leadership.
Later in the year , the Bolshevik Party overthrew the new government and set up their own government led by Vladimir Lenin.
Lenin ordered Nicholas II and his family to be killed.
1918
In 1918 Russia withdrew from World War 1.
Before WW2 (world war 2)
The U.S.S.R formed an alliance with Nazi Germany. Stalin and German dictator Adolf Hitler agreed to divide Poland , but Hitler broke the agreement and invaded the U.S.S.R. After the attack, the U.S.S.R joined the Allies to fight against Germany.
Lenin
Lenin was replaced by Joseph Stalin , who changed the U.S.S.R from a peasant society into a leading military and industrial power.

The rise of communisim
1500s Russia was ruled by czars. "czar" is the Russian word for Caesar or "ruler". Most of the people in Russia were poor peasants with few rights and no property.
1600s

1600s , many European countries were becoming more modern. Not Russia. The czars were happy with the old way of life
Catherine the great who came to power in 1762 , also modernized Russia. She supported education and the arts. Under Catherine's rule Russian empire grew in all directions.
