Weather
Natural Science
Type of weather
We get different types of weather: rain, snow, sunshine, clouds, fog and wind
Class activity: Learners will design/make a craft.
weather art - Rainbow
learner will get a template of a rainbow and they will use cotton balls for the clouds and colour the different colours of the rainbow.
Learners can observe and record the weather conditions such as temperature, wind speed and cloud cover. They can talk about how the weather makes them feel.
Cloud in a jar: Fill jar with hot water and swirl it around to create steam. Quickly place the lid on the jar and place ice cubes on top. spray a small amount of hairspray into the jar. watch as a cloud forms inside due to condensation.
Temperature
We get different types of temperatures. Temperature is how our body feels or how it feels outside, is it hot or cold?
And we use a thermometer to measure temperature at different times of the day, both indoors and outdoors.
Class activity: Experiment
Discuss how temperature changes throughout the day.
Show the learners how heat affects objects such as melting ice cubes or warming up water in sunlight or frying an egg let the learners observe.
Technology
Weather Instruments
Explain the different tools scientists use to
measure and predict weather such as thermometers, rain gauges and anemometers.
The learners can learn how to measure temperature.
Class activity: Leaners will design a Rain gauge
Create a simple rain gauge using a plastic bottle with marking on the side
Making a homemade weather vane to see which way the wind is blowing
Weather forecasting and predictions/Sunshine and Shadows
Explain to learners about the connection between the sun, shadow and weather, tell them scientists use special tools to study the sun and shadows to predict the weather show them pictures. Explain that when the sun shines brightly it means the weather will be warm and sunny.
Class activity: have learners trace the shadows of the figures onto the paper at different times of the day, encourage them to observe and compare how the shadows change throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky.
Create a mechanical device: Learners can make a anemometer using paper cups, straw and a pencil
When placed outside the cups will spin in the speed let the kids observe wind speed.
Social Science
Hot days, cold days, rainy days, windy days
Exploring the impacts weather has a places, discussing the effects of weather and different weather patterns like hurricanes, tornado and drought.
Class activity: Show learners the different clothes we wear
in different weather conditions like shorts, glass and sunscreen in summer on hot days and jersey and boots in winter on cold days
Give the learners a worksheet with different types of clothes and they should circle all the types of clothes we wear in summer.
Explore how weather influences our daily activities, e.g. wearing long pants and coats on a cold day
What the looks like sky looks like
The sky and its different appearances: Morning, afternoon, sunset, sunrise, stargazing and the different types of clouds: nimbus, cumulus and cirrus. At sunset and sunrise the sky can show different colours like pink, orange, red and purple.
Class activity: Weather conditions going
Going to discuss how the weather can affect the appearance of the sky.
On a clear day, the sky is bright blue, on a rainy day, the sky is grey. Take the learners outside to have a look.
