How did Hitler prepare the German economy for war?
Economic policies
Industrial workers had regular work and stable wages.
Big businesses fared well but small businesses declined.
farmers received government help, but were told what to grow and what price it was worth.
people lost their freedom
everyone had to work
people who refused to work under these conditions were sent to forced labour camps or concentration camps
Controlling the workers
all trade unions and workers organisations were banned. this meant that there was no way to complain about working conditions.
all workers had to join the German Labour Front (DAF). this had complete control over the workers.
wages, while stable, were low.
The work was regular, but the hours were long.
Strength Through Joy (KDF) program was created.
this aimed to reward the workers for their hard workers.
the more "Nazi" you were and the harder you worked, the better holiday you got.
Decline in the unemployed
women and jews (among other minorities) were removed from the unemployment register.
the German armed forces went from 100,000 to 4 million.
military conscription was introduced in 1935.
Re-arming Germany provided millions of jobs to make the weapons.
in 6 years, Hitler reduced unemployment from 6 million to 0.
all young men had to work in the national labour service (RAD). All men aged 18-35 had to do this for 6 months.
How did Hitler prepare the German economy for war?
Herman Goering introduced the 4 Year Plan. This aimed to make Germany ready for war.
Billions spent on military equipment.
Hitler and Goering intended to make Germany self sufficient on oil, steel and rubber.
Artificial stuff was brought in to replace expensive foreign commodities like coffee.
Controlling the lives of young people
Hitler Youth

they participated in military drills and athletics, camping and fighting practices: trained to be the soldiers of the future
the best were sent of to finishing schools were they were trained to be high ranking Nazis
girls
the German League of Maidens trained girls to be wives and mothers
Hitler believed that three things should be important to women: Children, Church, Kitchen.
Very differently treated to boys

some children refused to join
some didn't enjoy the activities
some just didn't agree with Nazi ideas
After 1939, when Germany become entrenched in the war, many hitler youth leaders were replaced
some felt their freedom was being restricted.
some kids rebelled against the regime and formed their own groups - like the edelweiss pirates. they listend to banned music and spoke their minds. most of the time it was harmless, but some, like the white rose group, organised protests - the members were arrested and killed.
why the germans enjoyed the hitler youth
it was very popular and was seen (and made to seem) fashionable and cool to be part of a hitler youth groups.
it allowed many people to "show" that they were "nazi"
for some it was the closest kids had to a holiday
it allowed the german children to find a sense of purpose and belonging.
set up in 1925
in 1932 it had 108,000 members. by 1939, this had reached 8 million.
offered a wide variety of activities
in 1939, hitler made membership compulsory
in 1936, a hitler youth law made it difficult for parents not to send their kids to hitler youth groups.
Education
History focused on Germany winning stuff
subjects kids were taught were changed to suit Nazi ideals
Jews and communists were blamed for historical failures/tragedies.
Biology was used to teach kids Nazi ideas on eugenics and the master race, and racial theories.
Students were encouraged to report teachers who didn't teach "properly"
