Cognitive approach in treating depression:
- CBT: Identify and challenge irrational thoughts, replacing them with productive behaviours to treat depression
- Beck: focuses on identifying and challenging irrational thoughts guided by the cognitive triad, faulty info processing and negative self-schemas. Patients test beliefs through activities like journaling positive interactions - analysis beliefs empirically
- REBT (rational emotive behaviour therapy): identify and challenge irrational thoughts vigorously. Uses logical or empirical arguments to dispute irrational beliefs - aim to disconnect negative life events from depression
- Behavioural activation: encourages in engaging in enjoyable activities to counter irrational beliefs with positive experiences
Evaluation:
- Supporting research: 327 adolescents with depression - CBT = 81% improvement, antidepressants = 81%, both = 86%
- CBT may not be suitable for severe cases - March et al: combination CBT and meds = most effective - severe may hinder motivation in sessions
- Focuses on present life - patient aware past events contributing may feel input overlooked - CBT reluctance to dwell may frustrate patients needing to address specific past traumas or losses
