Development Matters
Seven key features of effective practice
The best for every child
High-quality education is inclusive
High-quality education should help narrow the gap between disadvantaged children and their peers
All children deserve to have equality of opportunity for success
High-quality care
Children's experiences must be central to the practitioner's thinking
High-quality care is consistent
Practitioners should be responsive to children and their needs
The curriculum
What we want children to learn
Planning needs to be flexible and driven by children's interests
Curriculum must be ambitious with careful sequencing
Curriculum must take into account that children's development is not linear
Pedagogy
Helping children learn
Effective pedagogy is a mix of different approaches - e.g. free play, and adult-led activities
Enabling environments and planning these is an important aspect of pedagogy
Assessment
Checking what children have learnt
Practitioners need to understand children's development and their needs for assessment to be effective
Assessment does not require lots of data & shouldn't take practitioners away from the children for long periods of time
Self-regulation & executive function
Executive function includes the child's ability to focus their attention & inhibit impulsive behaviour
Good executive function helps children to self-regulate
Language development is central to self-regulation
Partnership with parents
Parents and setting should have strong relationships that will help support the children
Settings should have good, open communication with parents
Settings should encourage parents to support their child's development through things like reading
