DIGESTIVE ORGANS
Alimentary Canal / G.I. Tract: mouth (oral cavity), pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, anus
Accessory Organs: teeth, tongue, gallbladder, digestive glands (salivary glands, liver, pancreas)
G.I. TRACT LAYERS
Submucosa: consist of areolar connective tissue; contains blood and lymphatic vessels, lymphoid follicles, & submucosal nerve plexus that supplies surrounding GI Tract tissues; has abundant elastic tissues that aid in storage of food and restoration of its shape
Muscularis Externa: muscle layer that is responsible for peristalsis and segmentation; inner circular muscle layer w/ outer longitudinal layer; circular layer thickens in specific areas to form sphincters (which function as valves)
Mucosa: innermost layer that lines lumen; secretes mucus, digestive enzymes, and hormones; absorbs end products of digestion

Stomach: mucosal lining protects gastric mucosa, which is a thin layer of mucous gel and bicarbonate
