Abstract
The coupling of developmental biology and ecology into the science of evolutionary biology has given rise to a new discipline of biology known as ecological evolutionary
developmental biology. This field incorporates such concepts such as developmental symbiosis and plasticity, genetic accommodation, extragenic inheritance and niche construction into its premise. This can present a new layer of evolutionary synthesis. (Gilbert et al 2015)
Conclusions
The newly developed science of eco-evo-devo biology manages to re-incorporate ecology into evolutionary biology and extend modern synthesis. The recently discovered world of holobionts is a prime example of why this adjustment to current modern synthesis was necessary. Organisms are not simply single beings but can be comprised of various ecosystems of bacteria within larger organisms. Understanding this and how organisms phenotypes can be influenced by their environments greatly contribute to the science of ecological evolutionary developmental biology. (Gilbert et al 2015)
