On the 14th of October 1066, marched his army just over 10 km to confront Harold, wearing the relocks Harold swore on.
At about 9am the battle began, the English assembled on the crest of a small hill, creating a shield wall with Harold at the centre.
The Normans were in 3 lines and had 2000 cavalry which English battlefields had never seen before, on this scale.
The Normans also had a huge line of archers, some had crossbows but couldn't break the shield wall. The cavalry couldn't charge at the steep slope.
The English shield wall pushed forward, forcing the Normans back down the hill.
A rumour spread that William had been killed, but William lifted up his helmet claiming he was alive.
The Normans tried a tactic called the feigned retreat, so groups of cavalry pretended to flee.
This made the English believe they had won and chased after them, the cavalry then quickly sweeped round, breaking the shield wall.
