Nazi policies to reducen unemployment
Economic plans
The New plan
A. This was a plan introduced by the Minister of economy
B. It made agreements with other countries to guarantee Germany's supply of raw materials
C. It also began projects such as building roads, so unemployment would be decreased.
The four year plan
A. Hermann Goering created this plan in order to prepare Germany for war
B. This was done through autarky, in which Germany would become self-sufficient through producing their own oil, steel and rubber.
C. This plan didn't work though, as it caused frequent food shortages and rations
Despite autarky and the New plan, Germany still had a debt of 40 billion marks
Germany was still importing more than it was exporting
Reducing unemployment
Hitler fixed unemployment after the fall of the Weimar republic
Ways in which he did this:
A. The Nazis increased the amount of work there was available by building autobahns and new buildings
B. Hitler started spending more money on rearmament: Spending rose from 2 million Reichmarks in 1933 to 17 million in 1937. This created jobs for workers in arms factories, coal mines, iron ore extraction plants
C. Hitler broke the boundaries of the Treaty of Versailles and increased the size of the german army from 100,000 to 900,000
D. The Nazis paid private companies, like Volkswagen, to create jobs for people
E. The RAD (National labour service) was set up to hire single men for physical jobs. in 1935 all unemployed men in Germany were forced to join RAD
Evidence:
1933: 5.5 million Germans unemployed
1934: 3 million Germans uneployed
1936: 2 million Germans unemployed
1938: 500,000 Germans unemployed
The reality
Even though unemployment rates dropped, Nazis didn't account for invisible unemployment
Women weren't included in the unemployment rates: From the 1930s, they were encouraged to stay at home, as Hitler wanted all families to be ideal Aryan families.
Jews weren't included in unemployment rates: Since Hitler came to power, majority of Jews were sacked so positions could be taken by Aryans. They were also not included as citizens by Hitler, so tey wouldn't acount for unemployment
Anyone that had temporary employment (i.e. workers in agriculture) were counted as fully employed. This left millions of people unemployed really
While the unemployment decreased, the quality of life decreased as well. While wages rose, the cost of living also rose, and hours at work were increased.
The German labour front (The DAF)
After Nazis banned all trade unions, the Nazis set up the German labour front (DAF)
DAF wasn't a trade union though, because the Nazis hated Trade unions
They hated them because they were associated with communism
All employers and employees in Nazi Germany were part of the DAF
Although, it soon became apparent that the DAF didn't account for worker's rights
They increased the work hours, to increase production, without increasing wages
In order to make this subtle, the DAF used two campaigns "Strength through joy" and "Beauty of labour" to keep workers motivated
Strength to through joy
A. this ran the activities of worker s in their free time
B. This would satisfy workers on the off-work hours, so that they would be more productive at work
C. The hardest workers would be offered:
i. Cruise tickets
ii. Theatre tickets
iii. Concert tickets
iv. Tickets to sport competitions
Beauty of Labour (SDA)
This campaign was responsible for improving working conditons:
A. Provided hot meals during work
B. Provided work places with sports and leisure activities
However, these were still built by German workers, which took time out of their spare time.
