Conservative Core values:
A. Pragmatism:
a rejection of big ideas and change and puts emphasis on doing what works through experience- preferring the tried and tested
linked with Burke and Oakeshott
Makes them sceptical of change, as humans are seen as fallible and therefore moves towards equality or revolution are rejected
there is room for some change according to traditional conservatives- 'changing to conserve'
B. Tradition:
respecting the institutions which have created the 'accumulated knowledge of the past'
tradition provides society with an identity- people are more comfortable with things they are used to- do not want sweeping change
C. Human Imperfection:
three human imperfections, psychological (humans crave security), Moral (humans are naturally greedy) and Intellectual (most are incapable of rational thought so people need traditions and common sense ideas to guide them)
D. Organic Society:
society is like a living organism so developed slowly and cautiously- should be guided by longstanding traditions
a social hierarchy must be maintained: everyone must accept their place as authority provides stability
F. Neo liberalism
rejects state intervention and one nation toryism
free market must be left alone, the task of govt should be to keep inflation low and cut taxes
freedom can only be guaranteed by rolling back the state
E. Paternalism:
those in authority have an obligation to those they have power over- abuse of authority is intolerable
like a father, authority figures should guide those they lead
Those at the top have a duty to protect those at the bottom e.g. through large charity donations (one nation conservatism)
