English unit 1- Gothic Horror
The style of gothic literature employs dark and picturesque scenery, startling and melodramatic narrative devices and an overall atmosphere of exoticism, mystery and dread.
Pathetic fallacy
Definition- Using weather to represent the mood of the character.
Use- this is used to make the story more interesting and engaging by wanting the reader to make links ( between the character and the weather) themselves.
Pathetic fallacy emphasises the character's feelings.
Narrative hooks
A narrative hook is a literary device that "hooks" (or attracts) the reader in the start of the story to engage them to read further.
The puzzling hook- this immediately makes you ask question of the story.
The direct address hook- You are spoken to directly and feel involved from the start.
The subtle hook- This appeals to your sense of curiosity.
The atmospheric hook- this is descriptive and could evoke any variety of moods.
The visual hook- Imagery- it appeals to our sense of sight.
The funny hook- This only works if it appeals to your sense of humour.
The direct speech hook- This implies a lot of action and a fast pace.
Mood and tone
Mood- The feeling created in the reader.
Tone- the feeling shown by the writer.
