Introduction to Interview Skills
What is an interview?
a word from Latin and French means "see each other"
obtain information through discussion and observe how well the interviewee will perform to a job
interviewer: the person who ask questions
interviewee: the person who answer the question
Average Interview Duration
Depends on the type of the interview. If its the first telephonic round, it could be a short one around 15min or so. Subsequent-in video or technical interview, it be as long as 45 to 1.5 hours.
The longer the interview, the better chance of interviewer and interviewee to get to know each better and better chances of hiring.
Types of Interview:
Face-to-Face(most common type)
Can be one interview or a panel
Panel: 2-3 interviewers. Need to engage with the interviewers when answering
Questions can be strength based and competency based.
Tip: Prepare well, dress appropriately, dress confidently & smile
Online Interview
This happens when there is overseas opportunity
Webcam using Skype/Zoom, provides a quick virtual solution
Useful Time in pandemic and time saving for both parties.
Tip: Dress appropriately, ensure environment is quiet, smile & maintain good eye contact.
Screening- Initial phone call from employer. Series of questions to be asked to determine whether face-to-face discussion is neccessary
Tip 2: Have notebook and pen to take note of the important details like scheduling an interview, any follow-up (sending more documents etc)
Tip 1: Be polite. Take note of questions and request for a face-to-face or proper interview to share about yourself
Presentations
Ability to communicate clearly and formally
Testing your skills in timing, persuasion, analysis, public speaking and creativity
Presentation last 10-20minutes
Prepare in advanced using Presentation software
Tip 1: Do preparation, rehearse well, good voice projection maintain good eye contact with all present.
Tip 2: Bring a PowerPoint clicker so able to move meanwhile doing presentation. It shows confidence and makes you a more engaging presenter
Group Interview
interviewed alongside other candidates
interested in knowing how you stand out in a competitive situation
Display knowledge & highlight skills/experience that make you unique
Need to think carefully on how to answer the question
Tip: Stay focused on candidate responses and be prepared to value-add on your views. Never criticize or interrupt their views
Group Exercise
Involving 8-10 candidates
Often used when organisation have multiple vacancies
Usually industry or workplace-related problem that requires a solution is provided
Candidates are assessed based on performance criteria such as: teamwork, leadership, enthusiasm, decisiveness, persuasiveness, problem solving and critical thinking and communication
Tip: Be proactive, contribute and listen to people ideas. Then summarise and set an action plan
Social Events
Allow to socialize and network with candidates, assessors, recent graduates and senior management.
Tip: Go around, network and remember to highlight of your conversations

Research the Job and the Company in order to clinch to get the job. 47% people are rejected due to vague idea of the job they applying for and information about the company.

Things to do to prepare for interview
Familiar with the interview arrangement
Email/Call to ask if you are required to bring any necessary documents for verification
Prepare for Resume, portfolio, educational certificates, transcripts, testimonials, etc.
Search the company website for its values and the kind of people. It employs as it helps you decide whether you are a fit in the company
File documents neatly in a folder
