Introductions and Why Science Units?
Active Learning
The core elements of active learning: Student activity, engagement, motivation
Freeman et al’s meta-analysis, 2013
“Active learning increases examination performance by just under half a SD and that lecturing increases failure rates by 55%”
Increases hold across all STEM disciplines
Increases occur in all class sizes, course types, and course levels
Why Science?
Astronomy:
Early astronomers noticed differences in where the sun rose and set across different times of the year
They noticed different phases of the moon across the month
They noticed eclipses and comets
The Waggle Dance
Karl von Frisch, the 1973 Nobel Laureate (physiology & medicine), observed the behavior of bees!
He discovered the “waggle dance”
Science - An approach to inquiry that is tied to actual measurement and observation.
At the heart of science is simple curiosity and a desire to find explanations for phenomena that we observe around us
What is Science?
Hypothesis - A logical idea that can be tested
Observation - Careful examination of the real world.
Theory - Conclusions drawn from closely related phenomena or multiple observations.
Psychological Science
Psychological Science - A branch of science dealing with the mental processes and behavior of individuals and groups.
Applied Science – Application of scientific knowledge to practical problems or situations.
Jobs in Psychology:
Sports Psychologist, Marketing & Advertising, Organizational Development & Human Resources, Psychotherapist, Researcher, Criminal Investigator, and College Professor
Why learn about psychology?
To understand ourselves
To other understand other people and groups
To be better able to influence others, for example, in socializing children or motivating employees
To learn how to better help others and improve the world, for example, by doing effective psychotherapy
To learn a skill that will lead to a profession such as being a social worker, trainers, org development executives or a professor/scholar
Reflections
What is Science?
Making ice cubes is a great example of science. When you pour water into an ice cube tray and pop it in the freezer, something cool happens. The water starts off as a liquid, but as it gets colder in the freezer, it turns into a solid—ice. This change from liquid to solid is because the freezer is really cold, so it makes the water molecules slow down and stick together in a pattern, forming ice cubes
Psychological Science
Psychological science is all about understanding how our minds work and why we behave the way we do.
For example, some psychologists study how we think and learn, while others look at how we change as we grow up. Some explore why we act differently around others, and others help people with mental health issues. It's like trying to solve puzzles about how our minds tick, and the answers can help us lead happier and healthier lives.
Active Learning
It is seen in a classroom setting when working in class group activities.
Instead of a teacher doing a regular lecture and decides to do a group activity instead to learn about the topic is active learning
Why learn about psychology?
Learning about psychology is important because it helps us understand ourselves and others better.
It teaches us why we think, feel, and act the way we do, which can improve our relationships and problem-solving skills.
By studying psychology, we become more aware of mental health issues and how to support ourselves and others.
Why Science
Studying science helps us understand how things work in the world around us. For example, scientists have figured out how to make vaccines, which are like shields that protect us from getting sick. By learning about germs and how our bodies fight them, scientists have made vaccines that stop diseases like measles and flu from spreading. This helps keep people healthy and saves lives. So, studying science helps us solve problems and make life better for everyone.
