Plant Histology
General Cells examples
Cork
Example of cell wall
Capsicum annuum (bell pepper) epidermis
Vacuole takes up most of cell
Middle lamella is the area between cells
Cell wall very clear. Can't see cell membrane really but it's inner from cell wall
Allium cepa (red onion) epidermis
Red area is central vacuole takes up most of cell
Nucleus is circle. Nucleolus is another circle within nucleus
Cytoplasm is clearish between central vacuole (red) and cell membrane
Plastids
Chromoplast
Orange dyed dots are chromoplasts
Example is parenchyma cells in bell pepper
store colored lipids (protects from UV and color)
Amyloplasts
Parenchyma of potato
Dark stained with striations is amyloplast
storage plastid (starch here)
Chloroplasts
photosynthesis
Green dots = chloroplast
Growth
Eudicot
Primary growth
Secondary growth
Bark
Softwood
Hardwood
cross/transverse
tangential
Longitudinal/radial
Alteration of generations
Liverwort
antheridiophore (male)
Pink dots = sperm
lollipop shaped structure = antheridium
archegoniophore (female)
Embryo undergo mitosis = sporophyte
Mosses
antheridial heads
archegonial heads
Sporophyte (moss capsule)
Ferns
Microgamteophyte
Megagametophyte
Sporophyte
Vascular
Moss example
No true vascular tissue (hydroids and leptoids)
Monilophyta
tracheid dead at maturity
Sieve cells and albuminous
Angiosperm
Eudicot
Monocot
Roots
Apical meristem
Shoot apical meristem
Root apical meristem
Root cross section
Monocot
Has pith unlike eudicot
Eudicot
Lateral root growth
