biological psychology practical investigation
AIM
to investigate the relationship between average hours of sleep and a score out of 145 of aggression, measured using the Buss & Perry questionnaire and self report data
Alternative hypothesis
- there will be a negative correlation between hours of sleep and aggression scores out of 145 on a self report questionnaire
Null hypothesis -
there will be no significant correlation between hours of sleep and aggression scores out of 145 on a self report questionnaire. Any relationship is due to chance factors
METHOD
co-variable - sleep
hours of sleep at night over 1 evening - noting times we went to bed and looking at time in morning
co-variable - aggression scale
higher scores on the likert scale = higher aggression
SAMPLE
17 ppts
all from the same psychology class at king Edwards VI college
9 female, 6 male
target population -
teenagers aged 16-17
opportunity sampling
ETHICS/CONTROLS
allowed ppts privacy - in their homes w/ self report data
questionnaire was better than an interview for social desirability and confidentiality is ensure
time measured
- checking time you went to bed and take off ~30 minutes for falling asleep
sleep
- operationalised as night time sleep
RESULTS
sleep doesnt have much effect on aggression levels
aggression and sleep arent correlated
as sleep increases (between 7-9 hours), aggression increases prior to 70/145
weak positive correlation
critical value:
0.414
observed value:
-0.08
significance level:
0.05
PROEDURE
1)
record the hours of sleep that night - measuring the time between going to sleep at night and waking up the next morning
2)
then the participants took the Buss-Perry aggression questionnaire within the first 30 minutes of waking up
The higher the score on the questionnaire, the higher the levels of aggression
EVALUATION
Generalisability
- narrow sample
students may have diff sleep patterns
Generalisability
- opportunity sample
more useful appications
reliability -
standardised procedure (variables like BP scale and nighttime sleep)
reliability
- setting wasn't controlled since it was at home so there could've been extraneous variables
application -
anger & grumpiness may not be due to sleep so treating aggression may not have to focus on 'fixing' sleep
it may be due to other factors like testosterone
validity -
BP questionnaire is objective since it collects quan data
validity
- self report data could reduce validity due to social desirability
validity
- small sample size means there's a higher risk of anomalies
validity
- high eco validity due to at home environment
validity
- low mundane realism as task was abnormal since some statements dont relate to students
ethics
- results were anonymous so ppts dont feel pressured to answer a certain way
