Independent Films

They vary in style and genre but they’re often designed to make you think about certain subjects or issues and feature challenging narratives
often raise money from a variety of different sources. Like collaborating on the production and sharing industry skills and financial resources, or securing funding from private investors or being crowdfunded by the internet.
They’re entered into local, national and international film festivals to gain exposure and attention from distributors - who may want to buy the distribution rights. They tend to get theatrical releases nationally and internationally as well as making deals for DVD, Blu-ray and on-demand releases.
Independent films rely heavily on critic reviews on newspapers, magazines or online publications that specialise in independent film (e.g. IMDB). Prizes from film festivals can help attract potential audiences and increase the amount of cross-platform media coverage.
Blockbuster Films

Obvious character tropes, easy-to-follow narrative with universal themes, high production values which allow for CGI, high profile celebrity play roles in the film, the main roles in the film are ‘larger than life’ characters rather than ordinary or real people

They may be promoted marketed through merchandise or tie-in deals with fast food chains. Pop stars may also produce songs for the soundtrack which will help market the film to a wider audience.
