Mangroves
What are mangroves?
-
While mangrove plants are able to grow in freshwater water areas, they grow better in waters with high salinity due to the absence of bacteria, which are not able to grow in such conditions
-
-
Where are they found?
Most mangrove forests are located near areas with tropical climate. They grow best where average air and water temperatures do not fall below 25 degrees Celsius. They are unable to withstand cold temperatures and cannot survive in places far North and South of the tropics.
Mangrove plants also require calm water conditions so that their seedlings are able to take root without getting washed away by strong waves. Calm water conditions also allow accumulation of fine sediments that contains nutrients for mangrove plants to grow well. Hence, mangrove forests are found only in sheltered environments, along or near coasts.
