The Night of the long knives and Hitler's rein as Fuhrer
Causes
Even though the SA played a huge role in securing Hitler's power in Germany, Hitler still felt like he needed to weaken them
Reasons
A. The SA was becoming too powerful, as it had 2 million members by 1934, which would allow Ernst Rohm, the leader of the party to become a rival to Hitler
B. The Head of the SS, Heinrich Himmler, didn't like the influnce that the SA presented
C. SA members abused their power and were very violent, which embarrased Hitler and lost him support from the public
D. The leader, Ernst Rohm, was a homosexual, which Hitler thought would affect the aims of the Hitler youth
E.Rohm had socialist views, which greatly opposed Hitler's views
F. The SA was interferring with Hitler's plans to rearm the German army, as the SA wanted to be Germany's army
Events:
1.On the 30th of June 1934, Hitler launched the night of the Long knives
Hitler's SS arrested 200 SA members, where they were taken to Munich, from which 90 of them were executed
Part of this group were Ernst Rohm, Von schleicer and gustav von kahr, as Hitler viewed them all as enemies
Hitler becoming Fuhrer
1.On the 2nd of August 1934, Hindenburg died.
Hitler used this, along wiht his power as chancellor, to declare himself as the Fuhrer (supreme leader) of Germany
He was now in full control of the Third Reich
THIRF REICH: Germany's third empire
From now on, soldiers would swear an oath to Hitler directly instead of to the country
This means that the army had to obey every single one of Hitler's orders, even if it went against what the military commanders were saying
