unstructured observation
This type of observation does not follow a predetermined set of criteria. This approach is flexible and open-ended.

behavioural categories
An observational technique wherein participants' possible behaviours are separated into more specific components. This allows for operationalisation of the behaviour. For example, splitting aggression into categories of “swearing” and “punching”.
naturalistic observation
a psychological research method used to accurately observe and record behavior in the environment in which it normally occurs.
controlled observation
carried out in conditions where the researcher can control, like a labratory

time sampling
the time period to be observed is broken up into a series of time intervals, and records of behaviour are related to these time intervals
researcher/observer bias
could occur if the observer has a particular expectation of what they are likely to see during the observation period, they could then be more likely to record data in the way they expect
