the process in which groups of people become increasingly interconnected on a global scale due to developments in communication and transportation.

Cultural homogenisation
The idea that cultures are merging and becoming similar
It is often characterised by the following;
capitalist ideology-idea to make profit
consumerism-purchasing
secular ideas-becoming less religious shifting towards rational/scientific views
increased individualism-individual priorities over societal and communal expectations,everyone working to improve themselves

-states globalisation has an American face– Mickey Mouse, Big Macs, Coke, Pepsi, IBM, Apple, Windows, Intel Pentium, Cisco etc.

-also argue that cultural homogenisation is occurring due to:
Computer software not being localised therefore Microsoft for example reflects Western ways of thinking.
Advertising by the West is broadcast on a global scale therefore presents ideas on what is ‘desirable’.
Antisocial behaviour on the internet can reflect Western ideas about morality and deviance, for example accessing private information, racism, sexism and other forms of harassment.
Digital communication does not give rules or police morality and ethics that can occur in local cultures such as Western views regarding liberalism (for example the Egypt protests discussed previously).
Virtual communities
a social network of individuals who create an online community which may or may not reflect their lives offline e.g through message boards, chat rooms, virtual worlds and groups/pages on social networks.
