Victorian Compromise: the intellectuals wanted to instruct and entertain their readers. Their works combined realism with an adventurous tone and moral aim.
The anti-Victorian reaction: they were influenced by the birth of realism so the realistic representation of the world. Realistic writers were influenced by positivism: they tended to see life from a pessimistic point of view.
The author who probably best embodied all the features as well as the contradictions is Charles Dickens: Oliver Twist, The Old Curiosity Shop, Bleak House. Giovanni Verga focuses more on rural lifestyle and Dickens focuses on urban settings.
