How has migration, both internal and international, influenced the demographic composition of the region?: Comparing the internal migration between 2013 and 2023 there has been a significant change. In 2013, there have been more immigrants moving into the region than emigrants moving out, though the numbers differ from a few hundreds to a few tens. For example, the immigrants in Veliko Tarnovo, which has the most influx and outflow of people, in 2013 had 4954 immigrants and 4661 emigrants. On the other hand, in 2023, Veliko Tarnovo had 3876 immigrants and 4571 immigrants, meaning that more people left than came in, thus resulting in a negative population growth. Furthermore, in Silistra, which has seen the least influx and outflow of people in both years, in 2013 there have been 1894 immigrants and 1808 emigrants, meaning that, even though the difference is small, the population change was still positive. However, in 2023, Silistra had 1597 immigrants and 1974 emigrants. This information shows that in recent years there has been a significant outflow of people out of the region. Those people who are migrating out of the region are mostly people who are able to join the work force, i.e. 15-64, and by losing them the region is in danger of having too much dependent population and too little labour force to look after the dependents. Additionally, there has been a lot of international migration to and from Bulgaria that has affected the North Central region. The country has seen positive immigration growth in recent years after it became a part of the EU. However, it has seen positive emigration growth also. The majority of the people immigrating to Bulgaria are Bulgarians and Non-European union individuals. The Non-EU individuals are predominantly people who are seeking asylum in Bulgaria from an ongoing conflict in their country, for example Palestine, Syria, and Ukraine. Though the North Central region is the best destination for people seeking asylum and possibly the opportunity to establish themselves in a new country, if there is an influx of immigrants into the region this can change the demographic make up of the region by providing it with more work force, since many immigrants are of working age, and more diversity.
