BBK 2: Heredity and Genetic Web Activity
Heredity(Video)
Genes
: sets of instructions in each human cells that determined inherited traits and physical features.
Dominant Genes
: Genes that are in control and determine the inherited traits and physical features.
Recessive Genes
: Genes that are weaker and whose traits are not inherited or appear
Learned Behaviour
: Things that we're taught and learned through experience
Heredity
: The passing of traits and physical features from parents to children.
Inherited Traits
: Features that we are born with.
Observable Human Characteristics
Earlobe Attachment
: There are 2 types of earlone attachment which are detached and attached earlobe. It's pattern of inheritance is difficult to predict.
Tongue Rolling
: Some people can curl up their tongue to form a tube shape. The trait is controlled by a single gene and environmental factors also influence the trait.
Dimples
: Dimples are small and natural indentations on the cheeks that can appear on one or both sides. It's highly heritable and considered as "irregular" dominant trait. Having a dimple is probably controlled by one gene or influenced by many genes.
Handedness
: Handedness describe our preference to use either right or left hand.
Genetic Disorders
Albinism
: It is a group of genetic disorder where people have noor very little colour in the hair, eyes and skin. Sun protection is vital
Angelman Syndrome
: It's a rare syndrome that cause physical and intellectual disability.
Ankylosing spondylitas
: It's an arthritis that mainly affects the spine
Apert Syndrome:
It is a rare condition that causes abnormally shaped skull, toes and fused fingers
Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease
: It's a disease that affects the nervous system.
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia:
It's a condition that affects the adrenal glands and causes imbalances in the levels of certain hormones
Cystic Fibrosis:
is a genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system
Down Syndrome:
It's a syndrome that caused by trisomy 21 and caused by learning difficulties, and some health problems.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy:
It's a muscular dystrophy in kids that causes gradual loss of muscle function, affecting everyday activities.
Ehler-Danlos Syndrome:
It's a conditon with very loose joints and wasily brushed or stretchy skin.
Fabry Disease:
It's a rare genetic disorder taht affect many parts of the body and lead to many different symptoms.
Fragile X Syndrome:
It's the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability.
Haemochromatosis
:It causes the body too much iron, leading to organ damage.
Haemophilia
: It stops proper blood clothing and leads to abnormal bleeding.
Huntington's Disease:
It's a disorder that affects the nervous system that worsens overtime and caused difficulty controlling limbs and cognitive and emotional changes.
Klinefelter(XXX) Syndrome:
It's a syndrome that caused small genitals and infertility.
Marfan Syndrome:
The condition affect the tissues that strengthens and stabilises joints and muscles.
Neurofibromatosis:
It's a genetic condition characterised by benign tumours.
Noonan Syndrome:
Children with the syndrome may have unusual facial features, heart and growth problems.
Prader-Willi Syndrome:
It's a rare genetic condition that caused limitless appetite.
Rett Syndrome:
It causes intellectual and physical disability.
Tay-Sachs Disease:
Babies with the disease develop slowly, lose vision and speech and typically don't reach reach school age.
Thalassemia:
It's an inherited blood disorder that prevent someone from making enough healthy haemoglobin
Tourrete Syndrome
Its a syndrome that makes people to make involuntary repetitive sounds and movements.
How can probability be used to predict genetic traits?
Probability used to predict genetic traits in the usage of Punnet Square by dividing phenotypes produced by possible genotypes with the total amount of pissbility of phenotypes. The phenotypes with the largets probability can be predicted to be the genetic traits.
