Dietary Requirements
Background
Fitness focussed need a well-planned diet that contains vitamins and minerals that support their activity, while providing enough protein for growth and repair of body tissues
The amount of each food group and specifically extra nutrient requirements for good health are dependent on the type of sport, amount of training, and the time spent on activities to achieve that level of fitness
Vitamins and Minerals
Vitamins, minerals, herbs, meal supplements, sports nutrition and natural food products need to be examined to assess the value added to the diet of a fitness focussed person and the likelihood of overconsumption
Fitness focussed need a well-planned diet that contains vitamins and minerals that support their activity, while providing enough protein for growth and repair of body tissues
Protein
Create excess weight gain if the protein consumed is not lean
A diet too high in protein can be expensive and may affect kidney function
Include high-protein foods carefully
Protein-based food consumption is recommended as 12-15% of daily intake as it plays a key role in post-exercise recovery
Water
While water is the best source for hydration, salts lost during sweating in a hot climate can make dehydration worse
Recommended that sodium is replaced so that water can be absorbed into the blood stream more effectively
Dehydration in extreme cases can cause kidney failure and death
Sports drinks are suitable for endurance and extreme fitness activities
The longer the activity, the more water and frequency of consumption is needed
Carbohydrates
Adjust carbohydrate consumption depending on level of activity
Consumption of 55% of total intake dietary foods containing unrefined carbohydrates is recommended
Wholegrain and wholemeal carbohydrate sources, avoid using refined foods such as white bread, lollies, jams
Low glycemic index (GI) which provides more gradual energy release during digestion
This slow-release effect on blood glucose can be useful during moderate exercise
Health Concerns
Meal supplements do not contain the fresh and natural components than that of a home-made meal
Consumers are likely to develop deficiencies as a result of not consulting with a medical or nutritional consultant prior to following strict diets
Fitness focussed consumers may be inclined to focus particularly on one or two nutrients meaning they could develop deficiencies in other vitamins, minerals, or macronutrients
Emerging Food Trends
Carnivore diet
Increase in muscle mass and strength, potential to reduce inflammation, thereby aiding recover
Eliminating all plant foods from your diet and exclusively eating meat, fish, eggs, and small amounts of low-lactose dairy products
A form of ketogenic diet, boasts weight loss, improved mood, as well as blood sugar regulation
Paleo diet
20% carbohydrates, provided by fruits, seeds, roots and sometimes ancient cereals, with very few complex carbohydrates, 40% protein and 40% fat
Fitness focussed consumers may follow this diet due to the high protein and unsaturated fat intake that is essential for post-exercise recovery as well as the build/repair of body tiissue
May assist in weight loss or maintenance of a healthy weight
Keto diet
Improved endurance performance and body composition
Seafood, meat and poultry, non-starchy vegetables, avocados, berries, nuts and seeds, eggs, high-fat dairy products, olive oil and other oils, and high-cocoa chocolate
Low-carb, high-fat diet that causes weight loss
Protein Powder
Aid weight loss and help people tone their muscles
Fitness focussed consumers are likely to access protein powder due to the many nutritional benefits in relation to muscle and tissue health
Help build muscle, repair tissue, and make enzymes and hormones
Meal Supplements
Research has found that meal replacement shakes can help with weight loss
Fitness focused consumers believe that these supplements are beneficial due being aware of exactly how much of each nutrient is in the item and controls portions
Meal replacement shakes are often high in fibre which helps healthy digestion, so you don't get bloated or have constipation
Reformulations
Sports drinks have largely been developed to replace electrolytes lost during bursts of intensive activity
Companies are responding as more products with less sugar are offered by soft drink manufacturers
Consumer markets have developed protein powders to address protein requirements
In 2018, Nestlé announced that some of its bars would reduce their sugar level by 30%
Use of taste enhancers which lack a salty taste but enhance salty taste when combined with NaCl. Achieved by activating the receptors in the mouth and throat. ie. amino acid, lactate, yeast products
