what is behavior?
Behavior is simply how or in what way a living or non living being acts based off of situation or other external factors.

it is all about the unique blend of thoughts, feeling & behavior that makes us, us
in sum total ...personality is a dynamic organization within an individual & psychological system that determines one's unique adjustments to one's environment.
- how he/she is different from others as well as how he/she behaves in the different situations

advocates that part of personality , finds its origins in biology

Personality theories
Trait theories: attempts to learn what traits make up personality & how they relate to actual behavior

psychodynamic theory: focuses on the inner workings of personality, especially internal conflicts & struggles
Freud's psychoanalytic theory: is based on three main assumptions *personality is governed by unconscious forces that can't be controlled.
- childhood experiences plays an important role in determining adult personality.
- personality is shaped by the manner in which children cope with urges/desires.
the id, ego, & superego are arranged into different layers of awarness

3.unconscious layer: includes thoughts, memories, feelings & desires that we are not aware of but that greatly influence our behvavior

- such conflicts arouse anxiety & we use defense mechanisms - largely unconscious reactions that protect a person from painful emotions such as anxiety & guilt.

*Briggs & Myers developed the MBTI to understand individual dofferences
