Plantation slave in American South
Slave masters had full control over slaves.
Slaves could be brutally punished by masters.
They were property of owners.
Only with permission slaves could leave plantation.
Slaves had no rights.
Slaves often rented out to other farmers.
Work conditions very bad.
Slaves used as prizes in lotteries.
Work from sunrise to sunset, very tiring work.
Could be won/lost - card games & horse race.

Stories
Anti-slavery stories published, encourage abolish movement.
Black & white abolitionists told stories of runaways, get support for movement.
1800s - movement start to end slavery in South.
Slave Culture
Songs
Mixture of Christian hymns & African music.
Dancing, hand clapping & foot tapping.
Music became important part of slave culture.
Words had Christian ideas & slave hardships.
Created songs (Spirituals) to express feelings.
Most slaves converted to Christianity.
Slaves not allowed to speak W. African languages or practice indigenous religions.
Tried to break their spirits.
Slave owners wanted control of slaves.
Double message - hope of freedom on Earth, & end of pain in heaven.

Some simple names also given 'Curly', 'Little' or 'Big'.
Names were from the bible, ship they arrived on or the work they did.
Owners changed slave names to English names.
African names had personal meanings, given in special ceremonies in W. Africa.
Friends & families seperated.
Taking their name took their tie with homeland.
If master died, slaves sold to other owners.
Resistance to Slavery
Found ways to resist.
Did many things make difficult for owners.
Slaves hated slavery.
Slaves resisted by:
Murdered owners.
Broke tools.
Committed suicide.
Burned crops & houses.
Got drunk often.
Pretend to be sick.
Not do what told & frustrated owners.
Stole master's food
Indifferent & no emotion with owners.
Cheeky & back talk.
Passive & no initiative.
Hurt themselves.
Working slowly.
Ran away.
