ACTIVE
An active sentence has a:
Subject:
the person or thing that does the action of the verb.
Verb:
a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence, and forming the main part of the predicate of a sentence.
Object:
is the person or thing that is affected by the action
Use:
We use this type of sentence every day. It is the most used structure
PASSIVE
A passive sentence has a:
Subject:
Is the person or thing that is affected by the action. Has the same meaning as the object of an active verb.
Object:
the person or thing that the verb is happening to. The subject in an active sentence.
Uses:
When we don't know who or what does the action of the verb.
When who or what does the action isn't the focus of the sentence.
Present simple
STRUCTURE:
[+] Subject (passive) + is/are + verb in Past Participle
[-] Subject (passive) + is/are + not + verb in Past Participle
[?] Is/ are + subject (passive) + verb in Past Participle
EXAMPLES:
A meal is being cooked by me.
A car is given to me by him.
Food is being eaten by Carrie.
Past Simple
STRUCTURE:
[+] Subject (passive) + was/were + verb in Past Participle
[-] Subject (passive) + was/were + not + verb in Past Participle
[?] Was/were + subject (passive) + verb in Past Participle
EXAMPLES:
Cricket was being played by Sam.
A letter was being written by him.
The sweater was worn by them.
