G5 Exhibition 2024 Sustainable Cities and Communities
Main topic
SDG
History of Sustainability
The concept of sustainability, or Nachhaltigkeit in German, goes back to Hans Carl von Carlowitz (1645–1714), and applied to forestry. But renewable energy dates back to 200 BC as water wheels were used. But it wasn't until the 1800s that wind, water and sunlight were harnessed to generate electricity. Here are some important events in the evolution of renewable energy.
History of pollution
Evidence from Greece shows that there were problems of polluted air about 2400 years ago. The book, Airs, Waters, and Places attributed to Hippocrates (ca 400 BC) and suggested all sorts of illness as being related to the quality of air.
Possible solutions for the future
.
Send the trash to space, and burn it up in the atmosphere
Using renewable energy
Plant trees and plants on buildings to save space
Sustainable transportation
Electric cars
More public transportation so people don’t buy as much cars
Walking and biking instead of going on a car
Create electrical aviation
Reduce, reuse, recycle
Examples for the SDG
civilizations and people that are already following this SDG
Copenhagen, Denmark
The city uses discarded wood, straw and refuse, along with human and animal waste to produce heat, electricity and biofuel. So it reuses a lot.
Oslo, Norway
The city uses a lot of renewable energy such as hydropower, it accounts 60% of Oslo's renewable energy.
Madrid, Spain
Madrid has a lot of trees. Over 55% of the city's streets are tree-lined.
Zurich, Swizerland
Zurich invests a lot on renewable energy, mainly solar energy as it uses a lot of solar energy.
Taiwan, Taiwan
Taiwan is very sustainable by focussing on sustainable growth, de-carbonisation and global collaboration.
San Francisco, USA
Recycling is a non-negotiable in San Francisco, and the city diverts 80 per cent of its waste from landfill.
Reykjavík, Iceland
All of the city's electricity is produced with hydroelectric power and houses are geothermally heated so most buildings are eco-friendly and there are negligible greenhouse gas emissions.
Frankfurt, Germany
Frankfurt is full of greenery and it makes up a third of the cities urban areas.
People
Ebenezer Howard
Howard proposed the blueprint and created the Letchworth Garden City by using a lot of Urban Planning.
Greta Thunberg
Greta Thunberg is a climate activist who became mute for climate change and did a school strike for climate change to stop global warming.
Elon Musk
Elon Musk is the founder of Tesla and he is very sustainable by finding sustainable fuels such as electricity to power things.
Wangarĩ Maathai
Wangarī Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977 to plant trees across Kenya, alleviate poverty and end conflict.
Stockholm, Sweden
Stockholm does not use much fossil fuels and a lot of renewable energy.
Questions
Nature
How many trees do cities like Oslo or Copenhagen plant?
What are some alternatives for cities that have too much people and can't plant trees?
How is Urban Farming more sustainable than normal farming?
What is Urban Farming?
Wellbeing
What is the full journey of Co2 harming our bodies?
How do people that live in unsustainable cities cope with the polluted air?
Who raised awareness about the issue of unsustainable cities?
Society
How did civilisations reach what they are today?
What is the most efficient and sustainable way to get rid of trash?
If a government finds unsustainable ways, how do citizens that want sustainable ways cope with it?
Economy
When did people start taking notice of SDG 11?
How much renewable energy does cities like Copenhagen or Oslo use?
When did humans start to take notice on the importance of sustainablility?
Exhibition: general topic
Energy production
Humans are digging up too much fossil fuels and uses a lot of factories which produces carbon emmsions and greenhouse gasses.
they are destroying animal habitats so they can use the land to create power plants
The Niagara Falls Alternating Current System was built in way back in 1895 by genius, Nikola Tesla and even now, powers many homes in the United States.
Humans need to start using more sustainable energy like solar and wind. This is because fossil fuel i a limited resource and once you use it, its gone. meanwhile, solar uses the sun and wind energy uses the wind so and none of them are going to run out anytime soon.
Questions
What percentage of electricities are renewable?
How do the most sustainable cities use energy wisely?
What country has the most sustainable cities?
What are some cheaper ways to get sustainable energy?
How do some sustainable cities manage their energy production?
How is energy production related to sustainable cities?
How are cities using their money for sustainability?
Supply of clean water
In some countries, they don't have enough clean water and if they don't have clean water, it may lead to sicknesses and diseases. And when someone gets the disease, others might get infected to and most of the time, the result is death.
Iceland has one of the most cleanest water and tastiest water on Earth! It's water is completely natural spring water running through filters of lava and rock and then purified which makes it tastes so good.
The Central African Republic has the least supply of clean water in the world due to damage in infrastructure during political armed conflicts.
Questions
How do cities manage their water bills?
What rivers or streams do different cities use for their water supply?
How long have cities been using water purification?
currently possible solution
planting more greenry
somehow reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere
The best solution by far is to cut of unrenewable use of energy like gas. In the future, cars would probably be replaced by all electric ones or humans would rely on sustainable transportation
Question
Is sending trash to space a a possible solution?
What is a good solution for countries that are undeveloped and cannot afford machines like windmills and water dams?
What are some plans countries currently have to improve sustainability?
How are cities developing into more sustainable cities?
