Rule Number 1

In direct speech, verbs are typically in the present tense, while in indirect or reported speech, they usually shift to the past tense. However, there are two exceptions to this rule.
Rule Number 2
Verb tenses change once you move from direct to indirect style, and modal verbs, except would, could, should, might and ought to.

Definition
"The reported speech is when you describe what someone said using your own words and changing the verb tenses to the past. In contrast to direct speech.
