Part 1(1000 words)
From your study of one of the core themes in EE814 and from the work that you did for TMA 03, state the problem that you have identified in your own practice or in a practice/learning setting with which you are familiar.
Drawing on the concepts and materials presented in the module, explain why the issue was ‘problematic’.
Problem is the lack of representation of ethnic and racial minorities at an international school.
This is an issue because the representation of the school supports and perpetuates European/White ideals of culture and knowledge is, despite being an 'international' school. Maintaining power and using the 'banking method' - Friere
Narratives and voices of POC (CRT) and 'funds of knowledge' (Moll et al) are ignored in favor of the dominant ethnic and racial groups.
Attempts to be more inclusive are only at the comfort of the dominant group (interest-convergence, CRT) and are performative/require POC buy in.
This lack of shared community responsibly (Rogoff) for a more ethinic and racially equitable school creates an environment where minority faculty and students are subjects to a double consciousness (Du Bois) and are treated with unconscious bias (Picower) that is normalized.
On the basis of your reading in the module (including the independent study articles), explain the ways in which a critical theory approach could help you understand and study this problem in your practice setting or a setting known to you.
Critical Race Theory helped me study this problem, because it helped me understand what solutions could be/should be in place to help create a more equitable environment for ethnic and racial minorities. By examining the points put forward in CRT (for existing issues but also proposed solutions), I was able to problematize my current school and ask questions exploring why these measures have not been put in place.
Drawing on the notes you have made in your learning journal, discussions with your fellow students and what you have learned from the module (including the independent study activities), outline ways in which you have refined the problem since you first identified it. If you have not refined it, explain why it was not necessary to do so.
I have refined the problem by looking at power dynamics and bias, and how this creates and perpetuates unconscious bias. Additionally, looking at theories of how to achieve greater social justice (especially through sharing and prioritizing of cultures) I began to wonder why it was my school was not doing this. Especially as the studies have shown the benefit. Finally, when reading more about CRT, I begin to see more theory and studies which brought into focus my own feelings of alienation in my own school and why that might be the case. In particular, it became clear how a continual lack of inclusion creates long lasting damage.
Part 2 (1500 words)
Identify three research questions that could be explored within a critical theory approach to gain a better understanding of the problem that concerns you in your practice setting. Using notes from your learning journal, discussions with your fellow students and the work that you did for TMA 03, explain how these questions have developed during your study of the module.
Justify these research questions with reference to the module readings and any other articles that you have read independently and consider relevant.
To what extent is there representation of racial and ethnic minority groups in the curriculum?
How does representation (or lack thereof) in the curriculum impact the experience of staff and students from minority racial and ethnic groups?
What ways has the school utilised the funds of knowledge of faculty and students from racial and ethnic minorities?
Explain how a critical theory approach might help you to transform practice. What facilitators or barriers might you encounter in your own practice setting? How could you use critical theory to explain these?
CRT would help transform practice by allowing dominant culture beneficiaries (especially those in leadership positions at the school) to understand the needs of those in minority positions. It may allow them to understand how current policy is performative, and what meaningful change could look like
Barriers faced might be that those from the dominant group may not find it in their interest to make meaningful changes, as this would mean having to relinquish power (marxism) There may be no interest-convergence of real change, especially as there is only a minority that would benefit
With reference to the module materials, describe and justify the methodology that you have developed to produce data to address your research questions. Using your journal notes, explain how this methodology has developed and the readings which have influenced it. Consider what data you hope to produce and how such data would address your original research questions.

Part 3 (1500 words)
Reflect on what you learned from the narrative interview that you undertook for TMA 03 and explain how you would use this experience to plan further narrative interviews.
It may not just be the school culture that is the issue, but the IB curriculum as a whole (which reinforces colonialist culture)
The school is trying to do more, but my interviewee cited not feeling safe enough to partake in the sharing of their culture
A lack of diversity from leadership down creates an unsympathetic approach to members of minorities
In future, I might give clear instructions for the timeline
Return to the notes that you made about your position with regard to social justice and equality in Unit 1 of Section 1. Has your own position changed in any way since you made those notes, from studying this module?
If your position has changed, explain how it has changed and what you learned in the module that initiated this change. Analyse any changes in your own practice that have resulted or you intend to effect in the future. How do you justify these changes?
If your position has not changed, explain why you are confident in your original stance and what you found unconvincing within the module materials (both set readings and those you accessed independently). Explain if studying the module has generated any change in your own practice and whether you now feel more confident about your practice as it was when you undertook Action 1.
Understanding of how to create social justice and equity has become more complex
I have learned that equality is a term that can be used to silence the needs of the minority, because everyone must be treated the same
social justice and equality are not the same. It is dependent on the context you are in
