In 2008-09 over 27 million tonnes of household waste was collected by local authorities. Of this:

50% of this waste was sent to landfill

The amount of household waste we recycled in 2008 reached an impressive 8.7 million tonnes. That alone saved the same amount of CO2 that nearly a million return flights from London to Sydney would produce.

recycling saves about 10-15 million tonnes of carbon emissions a year, the equivalent of taking 3.5 million cars off the road

tyres generate 6 million tons of particles a year, globally, and 200,000 tons of those tyres end up in oceans.

Tests by Emissions Analytics, an engineering consulting company based in England, found tires produce about 2,000 times more particle pollution by mass than tailpipes. Although not regulated, those emissions exceed the legal particle limits for exhaust.

The energy used to manufacture a new tire produces 31 kg CO2, while retreat energy is 22 kg CO2. The footprint of transport is roughly the same for both tire types. In total transport emissions add almost 10 kg CO2 for a new tyre.
