Catholic church
- Catholics viewed the pope as the leader of the Catholic church
- Hitler envied this, as he wanted everyone in germany to view him as the supreme leader over everything

The stand
- In 1937, Pope Pius the 11th would create a speech in which he criticised the Nazi regime over Catholic churches
- This was played in Catholic churches and schools all over Germany
- The Nazi response to this was very severe
The Nazi response
- Membership of the Catholic group would not be illegal, and all former members are forced to join Nazi youth groups
- Funding for the Church was cut
- Some monasteries and churches were seized by the Nazis
- Gestapo and the SS were sent to spy on churches
- All Catholic schools were turned into normal state schools

The protestant church
- Members of protestant churches were nationalists which agreed with Hitler's views
- Thus, in 1933, Hitler brought all protestant churches under one church, called the Reichh church
- Ludwig Muller was placed as the leader of the Reich church
