e.g. place, room, weather, music etc
Abernathy (1940): different groups of students, each taught and tested in various contexts
Group 1- taught by teacher, tested by teacher in same room
Group 2- taught by teacher, tested by dif teacher in same room
Group 3- taught by teacher, tested by teacher in dif room
Group 4- taught by teacher, tested by dif teacher in dif room
Group 1 performed best in test showing context cues at time of learning being similar to context cues at time of recall allows for more recall
