Land
Water, forest and minerals
-
One third of the population have no land, one fourth have small areas of land, the rest who are very little, have larger areas.
Expansion of cultivation
-
HYV seeds, chemical fertilizers, pesticides and better irrigation
Arrival of electricity brought about use of tubewells for irrigation which were more efficient and could irrigate larger areas of land, instead of time-consuming and inefficient Persian wheels
Before all farms had access to normal, low-yielding seeds that required organic manure and cow dung + less irrigation. Advent of green revolution brought HYV seeds that much more efficient, used more irrigation and chemical fertilizers pesticides.
Western UP, Punjab and Haryana were the first to use modern agriculture. They bought farm machinery like ploughs and threshers to make ploughing and harvesting more productive. Hence, they got much higher yield in less time n effort.
Sustainability of land
Use of chemical pesticides fertilizers causes reduction in soil fertility and destroys arable land. Unlimited use of groundwater dries up water table. Soil fertility and groundwater take time to be replenished. Hence modern farming techniques have adverse affects on the soil and must be controlled.
