A3
Locus of Control
-
Internal LoC: success measured by effort; often feel in control of emotions, actions and what they need to do for their health
External LoC: success happens for factors out of anyone's control; often feel dependant on conditions - can victimise circumstance
-
-
Weaknesses
LoC is often only influential in novel situations and usually doesn't affect familiar situations too much
The link to stress is not that simple - having an internal LoC does not prevent you from suffering from stress
Krause (1986) found that internal LoC respond to unavoidable events with stress and often blame themselves wrongly
Health Belief Model
-
predicting if someone will change their health-related behaviour, based on seriousness, susceptibility, etc
-
-
-
-
Strengths
It is used practically
Williamson & Wardle (2002) used the HBM to increase the number of people coming from screenings of bowel and colon cancers
-
-
-
-
-
-
Rotter (1966)
-
Method
reviewed studies linking LoC and other variables; developed a questionnaire to measure pps LoC (called 'the I-E Scale')
Findings
the I-E Scale is valid and reliable in measuring LoC. Internals act to improve their envir., resist attempts to be influenced and non-smokers are more likely internals
Conclusion
LoC is a powerful predictor of a wide variety of behaviours and is influenced by a range of factors such as parenting, culture and socio-economic backg.
