It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought—that is, a thought diverging from the principles of IngSoc— should be literally unthinkable, at least so far as thought is dependent on words. —GEORGE ORWELL, 1984
This quote from George Orwell's novel "1984" explores the idea that language shapes thought and can be used to control what people think. In the world of the book, "Newspeak" is a constructed language designed to serve the totalitarian regime's purposes by eliminating words and expressions that could be used for dissent or rebellion. The intention is that once everyone starts using Newspeak and Oldspeak (the original language) is forgotten, it would become impossible to even conceive of heretical or rebellious thoughts because the words to express them no longer exist. If people don't have the language to articulate a concept, the thought itself is suppressed, making resistance to the regime impossible. This demonstrates how language can be a powerful tool for controlling minds and maintaining power.
Do you believe that our thought is shaped by our language? Can our thoughts be manipulated by words?
Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis: the theory that the structure of a language influences how its speakers perceive the world around them.
In 1929 Sapir wrote:
Human beings do not live in the objective world alone, nor in the world of social activity as ordinarily understood, but are very much at the mercy of the particular language which has become the medium of expression for their society... we see and hear and otherwise experience very largely as we do because the language habits of our community predispose certain choices of interpretation.
Whorf made even stronger claims:
The background linguistic system (in other words, the grammar) of each language is not merely the reproducing instrument for voicing ideas but rather is itself the shaper of ideas, the program and guide for the individual's mental activity, for his analysis of impressions, for his synthesis of his mental stock in trade... We dissect nature along lines laid down by our native languages.
