Evaluate modernisation theory of development (40)
intro
Modernisation theory blossomed in the late 19th and 20th century and is rooted in the philosophical tradition of Enlightenment, with origins from the industrial revolution in Europe. It is based on the premise that the ‘modern’ industrial societies of the West represent the optimal societal standard.

pg 1 - Rostow's 5 stages of development
Walt Rostow (1971) identified 5 stages of development he believed all countries had to go through to achieve development
stage 1 -
traditional society → economy is based on agriculture & culture is tribal/clan based
stage 2
- preconditions for take off → agriculture becomes technological & mechanised
funding from western culture enables some to save capital (could be foreign aid)
stage 3
- take off → manufacturing overtakes agriculture and even if there are few industries, they still generate income
trad family & cultural patterns break down and populations migrate to cities for work
stage 4 -
the drive to maturity → manufactured goods can be exported to west
industry is diverse and wealth becomes spread through the country
stage 5
- age of mass consumption → most ppl live in cities and have good education & healthcare
many are employed in finance, banking or other services rather than manufacturing
