1.2 computer software
1.2.1 Types of software
Open source
This means that the source code of the software is open like Firefox, python or Linux. This means that it can be adapted to any persons needs and can have any unwanted features removed it is also usually cheap. These can also come with some drawback such as it being a security risk, it being prone to errors and requiring technical knowledge.
Closed source software
This is code that is restricted or no access to the source code. It is well tested by professionals, any problems with the software can be held against the company and there is usually as support line. This does mean that customers rely on the companies updates it will cost and there is no easy way to edit the software.
Off-the-shelf software
This software is made for general use with feature can be used for different features. this is things like office software and video games. This means that it will be well tested and updated and features can be requested and added. It is cheaper than bespoke for companies that don't have the money for it and it is usually from a reputable source like Microsoft. It can be a bit expensive to get for a single user less for a company, the software may be slower due to the amount of features and those features can't be removed.
Bespoke software
This is software that is tailored made to the request of the customer it is expensive and there can be issues with rights. The software will be built how the company wants, it will have no unwanted features, the look and design is down to the company so it can be made on brand for them. Bespoke costs quite a lot buy and it requires staff training for the software and the original programmers should be there so that they can fix the software if it breaks.
shareware
This is the traditional trail software that is just a limited time access to a paid software and then you have to buy or subscribe to the main software.
freeware
This is like shareware as it is trying to get people to buy the main software but it isn't limited time of the full software it is a limited version of the paid version so it may not get updates or miss features from the paid variant.

Antivirus software
This is piece of software that will scan files on a device and look for files that match a virus signature and after that it will quarantine the file and ask the user if it should keep the file quarantined, delete it or fix it (if a fix is found)
Firewall
This monitors and manages incoming and outgoing traffic on a network. This means if it detects a dodgy file it will deny it in or out and if it is coming from inside it will likely be logged what computer it came from.
Deframentation
This is when there are files on the HDD and when the disk is spinning the file is on different parts of the disk meaning that the file takes longer the defragmenter puts those files together so that the load speed is faster.

Monitors, managers and cleaners
system monitors will monitor will monitor a resource(s) and they will display they're usage usually in a graph. Managers will let users close processes and applications. Cleaners scan the HHD and removes unused files. These are all features in task manager.
Back up data
This is a copy of the data that is able to be referenced or copied of the main data is damaged or gone.
