Traditional Sheng (傳統笙)
-
It is one of the oldest Chinese instruments, with images depicting its kind dating back to 1100 BCE.Traditionally, the sheng has been used as an accompaniment instrument for solo suona or dizi performances. It is one of the main instruments in kunqu and some other forms of Chinese opera. Traditional small ensembles also make use of the sheng, such as the wind and percussion ensembles in northern China. In the modern large Chinese orchestra, it is used for both melody and accompaniment.
The sound of the sheng is made by exhaling or inhaling through the mouthpiece, and the player can quickly switch between the two to produce a relatively continuous sound without pause, similar to playing a harmonica. The traditional playing style is to play two or three notes simultaneously by adding fifths and/or octaves above the main melody notes. When higher notes are not available, lower notes a quarter below the main melody note can be played.
Xun(塤)
Xun is one of the oldest playing instruments in China, with a history of about 7,000 years. It is simple and unique, and is considered to be the closest to the Taoist Tianyi. It occupies an important position in the history of primitive art in the world.
The sounding principle of Xun is to control the size of the air mass in the cavity through the sound hole, so that it can make different frequencies of sound, so the position and order of the opening are relatively arbitrary. There are eight and ten-holes that open holes according to the traditional pentatone scale, and some use semitone openings. In order to facilitate beginners to use some common semitones, there are also those that add semitone holes on the basis of the full scale.
