Known as “Chinese lute”, it has a pear-shaped body with a varying number of frets. This instrument existed as early as the Han Dynasty, though used to portray a range of other instruments, it’s definition is commonly confirmed as the one we all know today since the Song Dynasty.
The pipa is one of the most iconic instruments from China and its history spanned over two thousand years, even having multiple derivatives of the same instrument in various countries that is still used and loved to this very day
The form of the pipa has also changed through the years, the change can be seen very easily in the handle as the ones from the Tang Dynasty is askew and the ones after is straight, and the backside is also less cluttered after the Tang Dynasty.
