Sexual Behavior

Gender dualism

Sexual characteristics

Female Choice

Darwin Ideas about women

"Zoologists salvaged Darwin’s theory of sexual selection by circumscribing or reconceiving what he originally intended by “female choice.” True choice they restricted to humans; although nonhuman animals might not be capable of choosing their mates in such a fashion, humans clearly were capable of such deliberations, and proper marriage choice in humans could lead to smarter and more beautiful children in future generations"(Milam 30).

The bounds between gender/ sex etc.

Behavioral/ learned

Monogamy as a good thing

Despite Huxley’s conviction that birds did not share humans’ capacity for choice, he argued that they did share a preference for monogamy. (Milam 40)

Beauty standards

In most cases, beautiful male display served as a signaling device and could be thought of exactly like a physical trait. “Display,” Huxley contended, “is therefore analogous to a copulatory organ: it facilitates the union of the sexual cells, though it acts on the psychological rather than the purely physiological plane.” He accepted female mate choice as the underlying cause of a trait only when he could identify the trait as “beautiful rather than merely striking” or as “intricate or delicate.” (Milam 40).

Flip in beauty standards

Further objectification of women.

Intersex peoples (Trans individuals)

There is something wrong/that needs correction

Too masculine to be a woman

Too feminine to be a man

"She may have looked like a woman, had a woman’s strength, and never had reason to suspect that she wasn’t a woman, but the examinations revealed that Patiño’s cells sported a Y chromosome, and that her labia hid testes within. Furthermore, she had neither ovaries nor a uterus. According to the IOC’s definition, Patiño was not a woman" (1 Sterling)

The Taboo of intersex.

"Gender they saw as a psychological transformation of the
self—the internal conviction that one is either male or female (gender identity) and the behavioral expressions of that conviction" (Sterling 3).

Self identification

Societal ideas of gender

Masculinity

Femineity

"From the viewpoint of medical practitioners, progress in the handling of intersexuality involves maintaining the normal. Accordingly, there ought to be only two boxes: male and female" (Sterling 8).

"Nowadays, months before the child leaves the comfort of the womb, amniocentesis and ultrasound identify a fetus’s sex. Parents can decorate the baby’s room in gender-appropriate style, sports wallpaper—in blue—for the little boy, flowered designs—in pink—for the little girl" (Sterling 31) .

Toxic Masculinity.

"The Tosefta, for example, forbids hermaphrodites from inheriting their fathers’ estates (like daughters), from secluding themselves with women (like sons), and from shaving (like men). When they menstruate they must be isolated from men (like women); they are disqualified from serving as witnesses or as priests (like women)" (Sterling 33).

"The individual him/herself shared with medical and legal experts the right to decide which sex prevailed but, once having made a choice, was expected to stick with it" (Sterling 36).

The medical correction of intersexuality

Emotionality

HYSTERIA

"...all women are hysterical and . . . every woman carries with her the seeds of hysteria. Hysteria, before being an illness, is a temperament, and what constitutes the temperament of a woman is rudimentary hysteria" (Gilman 287).

Socially Women don't have real problems that are not hysteria

"HOW THE LEADING KILLER OF WOMEN CAME TO BE A "MAN'S DISEASE"(Dusenbery 124).

Asexuality

Frigidity

Social pressures on queer peoples

"She laughs too, which brings about a release, and above all a loss of guilt towards a 'frigidity' for which she feels responsible, and which means, first of all, that she has been moulded into models of male sexual 'techniques' which do not at all correspond to her sexuality" (Frigidity:History 1) .

Female inequality in sexual contexts

"Any treatment undertaken had to attempt to address the underlying causes of an antipathic sexual instinct, whether neurasthenia or hysteria" (Frigidity:History 198).

Current laws being passed against Trans individuals

"In early 2022 the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists published a position statement on how to care for asexual patients. It says asexuality is not a disorder or a response to trauma and that asexual individuals often face difficulty in finding affirming health care" (Parshall).

Asexuality now a sexuality not a medical problem

Potential for intersex peoples?

Repercussions for other LGBTQIA+ individuals specifically youth.
