Epithelial Tissues - Coggle Diagram
Epithelial Tissues
General Characteristics
-
Little to none extracellular matrix; whatever does excist is composed of ground substance (glycoproteins)
-
Cells are avascular (lack blood vessels); oxygen and other nutrients diffuse through their membranes from capullaries in the underlying connective tissue; water from the cells diffuses into the connective tissue capillaries
Some epithelial cells have nerves but no in the stomach, intestines and cervix
Most cells have irregular surfaces from complex folding of their membrane. The extended folding produces microvilli (fingerlike projections that increase area of cell; usually appear on absorption and secretion cells). They make up the brush border. Cilia also occusr on cells (like the respiratory tract)
