-

Antiwar protests surged going into the 1970s. People were unhappy with things like the draft, the bombings in Cambodia, the Pentagon Papers, etc.

US Troops in Vietnam
US troop involvement increases in 1964 because of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (U.S. ship was allegedly attacked.)
U.S troop numbers plateau in 1968 after the Tet Offensive (Viet Cong launch large attack against U.S.) and it becomes clear that we are not winning the war.
"Although the Communists failed to establish lasting control of any place, the Tet Offensive marked a turning point in the Vietnam. Before the Tet Offensive, American leaders had claimed that the war was progressing smoothly. After Tet, however, the U.S government had to admit publicly that the war was not going well."
1970s Pentagon papers show the public that they have been mislead by the U.S. government on it's intentions and involvement in Vietnam.
Vietnamization: the process of getting south Vietnam to take more control of the war, while the U.S would withdraw its own troops.

Domino Therory: "The U.S government operated on the theory that if one country became communist, this could influence its neighbors to become communist. This was called the coming theory because it pictured a series of countries "falling" to communism one by one, knocking each other over as if they were a line of dominos."
Containment: "The idea of containment was to not challenge communism where it already existed but to prevent its spread."
Marshall Plan: The U.S pledges financial support (13 billion dollars) to Western European countries to make them stay capitalist, and not communist.
Truman Doctrine: pledged that the U.S would fight the spread of Communism worldwide (Turkey and Greece.)
