Topic 9e - Nanoparticles
Properties
High surface area to volume ratio, and therefor make good catalysts
-
-
-
Uses
Reactions take place on the surface of catalysts, the bigger the surface area, the more collisions there will be
nano medicine - tiny particles are more easily absorbed into the body, and could deliver durgs right into the cells
electronics - somed nanoparticles conduct electricity, so can be used in electronics
Sunscreens - nanoparticles are better than traditional materials at protecting the skin from harmful UV rays, and also give a better skin coverage
-
-
-
Disadvantages
-
-
If they enter the bloodstream, they could cause harm
Materials and their uses
-
Ceramics
-
-
Uses
-
-
Glass
-
-
Made by heating a mixture of limestone, sand and sodium carbonate
-
Metals
-
Malleable, can be formed into a variety of shapes
Some corrode easily, others don't
