ANABOLIC STERIODS
Overview
Anabolic steroids are a group of synthetic drugs. They copy the masculinising effects of the male sex hormone, testosterone.
Complications
The misuse of anabolic steroids can cause long-term side effects. These can include cardiovascular complications, liver disease, reproductive organ damage and severe mood swings.
Sporting examples mainly men take these but women do too. A lot of sports like weightlifting and strong men. Other sports like baseball.
Benefits of steroids
Steroids reduce redness and swelling (inflammation). This can help with inflammatory conditions such as asthma and eczema.
GROWTH HORMONES
Benefits reduces body fat and increases lean body mass
Overview
peptide hormone that stimulates growth, cell reproduction, and cell regeneration in humans and other animals
Sporting examples **
Athletes competing in power sports, bodybuilding, professional wrestling, mixed martial arts, swimming, baseball, strength sports, track and field, cycling, soccer, weight lifting, skiing and endurance sports**
Complications
Carpal tunnel syndrome.
Increased insulin resistance.
Type 2 diabetes.
Swelling in the arms and legs (edema)
Joint and muscle pain.
For men, enlargement of breast tissue (gynecomastia)
Increased risk of certain cancers.
erythropoietin (EPO)
Overview
glycoprotein cytokine secreted mainly by the kidneys in response to cellular hypoxia; it stimulates red blood cell production in the bone marrow
Benefits
increase the number of red blood cells and, consequently, their aerobic capacity.
Sporting examples - Boxing, walking, athletics
Complications
increase the risk of developing a blood clot.
