Surveillance
Foucault - Panopticon
The Panopticon is a theoretical modern for a prison. Inside, all prisoners can be observed by a single guard, hidden from their view. All prisoners could be under observation at any time, so they self regulate their behaviour.
This is a model for modern society, and reflects the world we live in through certain features.
Dispersal of Discipline - Schools, Employers, Workhouses all have a level of control over us
Carceral Archipelago - We move between "prison islands", like teachers, bosses, social workers, police. The whole population is being controlled
Criticism
Feminists like Koskela argue CCTV is an expansion of the male gaze. Rather than protecting people, it is an outlet for the vouyer in the form of a male camera operator
Mann et al - Sousveillance. Just as the system regulates people through surveillance, people can use phone cameras to expose systemic imnjusticses, regulating the system. Sousveillance = Surveillance from below.

Mathiesen - Synopticon
Surveillance goes both ways. Each individual is being watched, and has the power to watch others. Bike helmet cams, dash cams, phone cameras, all give each individual the power to surveil and be surveilled.

Criticised by McCahill. The Government can use anti terrorism laws to take away these tools, preventing them from being used to challenge the system
-
Lyon - Social Sorting
Potential risk is assessed and determines treatment for individual. People in the "Wrong group are treated with suspicion"
